Iris Katharine Hodgkin

Before most spring bulbs have stirred, the reticulata iris arrives, and few are as quietly remarkable as Katharine Hodgkin. Its small, perfect blooms are washed pale silvery blue, finely veined in deep blue and lit with a yellow blotch at the heart, pushing through cold soil in the earliest days of spring. In March to May it is at its best in pots, rockeries and at the front of a border, where its detail can be properly admired.
