Allium Forelock

The alliums bring a kind of structural magic to the late spring garden that few other flowers can replicate. Forelock raises its perfectly spherical deep purple-red head above the border in May and June, a small architectural marvel that also happens to be loved by every bee in the neighbourhood. As a cut flower it is exceptional — long-stemmed and dramatic in a vase, particularly at the stage where the globe is fully formed but still tightly closed. Leave it in the border and the bees will thank you; cut it for the house and everyone else will.
